Saidapet Residents Urge GCC and CMDA to Reopen Renovated Amma Park

Residents of Saidapet, Chennai, have urged the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) to reopen the renovated Amma Park to the public at the earliest.

Although renovation work at the park was reportedly completed around two months ago, the facility continues to remain closed. Residents said they have been unable to use the park for more than a year and are now planning a protest demanding its immediate reopening.

The Amma Park Users Association said the park was previously a popular gathering place, attracting more than 800 visitors every day. Schoolchildren, senior citizens and residents regularly used the facility for walking, jogging, exercise and recreation.

According to association secretary Saidai J Kathir, a representation was submitted to the Saidapet MLA about a month ago seeking the park`s reopening, but no progress has been made. Residents are now being forced to travel to parks in Ashok Nagar and KK Nagar for their daily walks and recreational activities.

The CMDA began the renovation of Amma Park in August 2025 at a cost of ₹2.91 crore. The upgraded facility includes modern play equipment, a renovated skating court and badminton court, seating areas, walking and jogging tracks, a refurbished fountain, restrooms, a small science park and outdoor fitness equipment.

Residents from areas including Theeder Nagar, Samiyar Thottam, West Saidapet, Panneerselvam Nagar and Sekar Nagar are among those dependent on the park.

Residents have also highlighted the importance of reopening the park for children and young people, particularly for sports and outdoor activities. The association, along with Makkal Needhi Maiyam functionaries, plans to hold a protest in the coming days.

A GCC official said that a joint inspection by the GCC, CMDA and the Saidapet MLA was conducted at the park about a month ago. The official added that the park would be inaugurated once CMDA confirms the date.
