Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery Metro Line DPR Nears Completion

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is close to finalising the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery Metro corridor. The planned line is expected to span 21.5 km with 19 stations, connecting key residential, commercial, educational and IT hubs across south Chennai.

CMRL officials said the DPR is in its final stage and is likely to be completed within the next two weeks. The DPR preparation was awarded to Systra MVA Consulting in August at a cost of ₹96.19 lakh. Once completed, the report will be submitted to the Tamil Nadu government for approval and later forwarded to the Centre for clearance and funding support. Officials indicated that the approval process and commencement of construction could take over two years.

The corridor is expected to significantly improve public transport connectivity and support Transit Oriented Development (TOD). Stations have been planned at high-traffic locations based on Peak Hour Peak Direction (PHPD) studies. Guindy, in particular, is set to emerge as a major transit and commercial hub due to its integration with existing suburban rail and future multi-modal facilities.

Key proposed stations include Medavakkam, a junction near Kamakshi Memorial Hospital in Pallikaranai, Guru Nanak College in Velachery, an interchange with Corridor 5 (Madhavaram–Sholinganallur), and integration with Velachery MRTS.

The reassessment study for the project began in March 2024. Initially, the extension was considered up to Little Mount, but growing travel demand, existing EMU connectivity, and plans for a multi-modal hub led CMRL to extend the corridor up to Guindy.
