Day After Diwali Declared a Holiday - Tamil Nadu Government Issues Order

Posted on: 18/Oct/2025 10:33:04 AM

The Tamil Nadu government has officially declared October 21 (Tuesday), the day after Diwali, as a public holiday across the state.

In a press release issued by the government, it was stated that the decision was taken considering the welfare of students, parents, teachers, government officials, and employees of public sector institutions who will be returning to their hometowns on October 20 (Diwali Day).

Accordingly, all government offices, public sector undertakings, schools, colleges, and educational institutions in Tamil Nadu will remain closed on October 21, 2025 (Tuesday). To compensate for this additional holiday, October 25, 2025 (Saturday) will be observed as a working day.

This decision follows requests made by several organizations and political parties urging the government to grant a holiday after Diwali to allow people to travel back to their workplaces comfortably.

With this announcement, the state will enjoy four consecutive holidays — from Saturday (Oct 18) to Tuesday (Oct 21) - allowing citizens to celebrate Diwali and spend quality time with their families.
