Chennai Police to Roll Out AI-Powered ANPR Surveillance in North Chennai

Posted on: 29/Sep/2025 10:30:49 AM

In a major step to curb vehicle-related crimes, the Greater Chennai Police is set to implement a state-of-the-art Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) surveillance system across North Chennai, popularly known as Vada Chennai.

The initiative will cover key areas including Royapuram, Tiruvotriyur, and Tondiarpet — regions that are densely populated and strategically significant. As part of the project, 180 high-definition 4K UHD cameras will be installed at 45 vital locations, such as Ennore High Road and Madhavaram High Road.

These AI-enabled cameras will be linked through a robust fibre optic network to ensure uninterrupted data flow. The system is designed to track vehicles in real time and generate instant alerts via SMS, WhatsApp, and email, enabling the police to respond quickly.

Officials said the move comes in response to the alarming rate of vehicle thefts in the city, with an average of 1,420 vehicles reported missing every year. Stolen vehicles are often misused in crimes such as chain-snatching and robbery.

A dedicated System Integrator will oversee the operations, including cloud-based data storage and a specially developed mobile application. Police believe the ANPR network will act as a strong deterrent and add “more eyes on the street,” enhancing security for vehicles and public spaces.
