The State Highways Department will soon construct U-turn service roads beneath the Padi and Korattur road overbridge (ROB) on the Inner Ring Road (Jawaharlal Nehru Salai).
Location: Between Villivakkam and Korattur railway stations
Purpose: To ease traffic congestion, improve road safety, and eliminate the Korattur North signal.
Beneficiaries: Residents of Villivakkam, Kolathur, Thathankuppam, and nearby areas; industries such as Wheels India, Lucas TVS, Sundaram Clayton; and visitors to the upcoming Villivakkam tank amusement park.
Project Details:
- Padi side: 374 m (left), 424 m (right), with 75 m under railway span
- Red Hills side: 364 m (left), 354 m (right), with 75 m under railway span
- Clearance: Over 5.5 m under railway girders
- Estimated daily usage: 5% of 24,299 commercial vehicles (traffic census, Dec 2022)
- Cost: ₹14.5 crore (administrative sanction on July 24, 2025)
- Announced in: Tamil Nadu Budget 2025–26
Officials say the project will improve traffic flow, prevent encroachments on IRR land, and provide smoother connectivity across both sides of the corridor.
