Launched in May 2016 by the Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, Swachch Surveskhan is a survey that is conducted every year to bring out the hygiene, sanitation and cleanliness present in villages, cities and towns across India. It is known that Swachch Survekshan was launched as a part of Swachch Bharat Abhiyan. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban development under Swachh Bharat Mission has been conducting the survey. In the survey usually opinions from the public would be collected and scores or marks would be issued and a list regarding cleanest city across India would be prepared.
The news that has come out now is that on Thursday the results of this annual cleanliness survey were released. As per some officials belonging to the SWM division of the Chennai Corporation, Chennai has been ranked 38th in the list of cleanest cities having more than 1 million population in India.
Based on the disposal of garbage and based on the handling of disposed wastes etc, Chennai was given 6822 marks in the survey.
In Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore city has secured 28th place, Madurai city 40th place and Trichy city 49th place.
