Chennai Set to Launch First-Ever Lounges for Gig Workers on June 11
In a significant move towards supporting the city`s growing gig economy, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will inaugurate its first-ever lounges exclusively for gig workers on June 11.
The first phase of this initiative includes newly constructed lounges in Anna Nagar and K.K. Nagar, designed to provide rest and recharge spaces for platform-based workers such as delivery agents, drivers, freelancers, and part-time service professionals.
The Tamil Nadu State Government has officially approved the launch, with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin emphasizing the need to ensure safety and security for women gig workers who access these lounges.
This marks a pioneering effort by the Chennai Corporation to recognize and accommodate the needs of gig workers in urban infrastructure, especially in light of the increasing dependence on flexible and app-based services in the city.
More lounges are expected to be opened across various zones in the coming months.
