Chennai Corporation Deploys High-End Suction Sweepers to Speed Up City Cleaning
In a move to boost sanitation and speed up cleaning operations, the Greater Chennai Corporation has introduced 10 advanced suction sweeper machines for use on city roads. Another 10 machines will be added soon, with plans to purchase 20 more in the pipeline.
Each machine can clean approximately 1 km per hour, or 800 meters in dust-heavy areas, significantly improving efficiency. The machines have already been tested in localities like Egmore, Royapuram, Purasawalkam, Choolai, and New Avadi Road, showing promising results.
Earlier, it required 4–6 workers to clean a 500-meter stretch. Now, just two operators can manage a machine, reducing manpower needs. The collected dust is transported to primary and secondary collection centers in each zone before being sent to dump yards.
