Good news from Southern Railways about the passenger traffic etc !!

From April to December 2022- 23, there has been an increase in the passenger as well as freight traffic and this was announced by the Southern Railways or SR. Point is that this has been high now when compared to the previous year at the same period.

As per a statement from SR it was clear that SR has been taking persistent efforts to handle ever increasing traffic volumes by operating reserved/unreserved passenger trains and special trains during  the peak seasons and festivals etc.  From April to December 2022-23 the south zone carried 468.237 million passengers and this was high when compared to the 225.612 million passengers it carried in 2021-22.

The passenger traffic has given a superb revenue of Rs 4689.46 crores and it has surpassed the RB target by 12.4%. It is learnt that in the month of December in 2022 the zone recorded an originating passenger traffic count of 54.99 million across all the segments of passengers. 

This included  reserved, un-reserved, and suburban when compared with the 40.01 million in December 2021 of 37.4 % increase. In December 2021, the earnings were Rs 375. 53 crores and it has increased to Rs 528.41 crores in December 2022.

There has been an increase in the freight handling by SR and during April-December 2022 the freight traffic was 27.660 million tonnes. It must be noted that the freight traffic of Rs 21.757 million tonnes in the April- December 2021. In April- December 2022, the earnings from freight traffic was Rs 2659.73 crores  and in April - December 2021 it was Rs 1989.56 crores. 

This shows clearly that there has been an increase of 33.68% in the April- December 2022. Point to be noted is that coal, food grains and fertilizers have fuelled the freight loading growth. An originating freight loading of 2846 million tonnes was recorded in December 2022.
