For re-greening initiative, 209 roads in the Chennai city are chosen

It was in the year 2016 Chennai city was hit by cyclone Vardah. This cyclone with wind speeds of 130 kmph destroyed the city and many roads in Chennai city were damaged. As many as one lakh trees were felled by this cyclone Vardah.

The latest news is for the plantation of saplings, the corporation of Chennai has identified 209 roads now as a part of re-greening initiative. Exotic species like rain trees are not included in the plantation drive. These exotic species were broken in parts or full by cyclone Vardah in 2016. It is now revealed that the Chennai Corporation would be planting 2000 saplings out of total of 23000 saplings of native ‘Portia Tree’ (Thespesia Populonia). It is important to note that 2000 Indian almond trees (Terminalia Catappa) plus 2000 saplings of neem and other species would also be planted by the civic body.

According to the officials belonging to corporation, 100 roads were planned initially but now as many as 209 roads across zones have been identified for the purpose of planting the saplings. In the month of June and July in the year 2017, field assessment was carried out and these 209 roads were identified based on the field assessment. Wider roads have been chosen for the current year plantations.

Care Earth Trust is a Chennai based bio-diversity research organisation is known. A report was submitted to the corporation by this Care Earth Trust. It was stated in the report that the avenue plantation along larger roads would be more visible. Hence managing the planted saplings would become easier. The cost of the project is estimated at Rs 5.29 crores.

Soon people travelling in the roads like Rajiv Gandhi Salai-IT Expressway, ECR, D.G.S. Dinakaran Road, Velachery main road in Adyar zone would be surprised because new saplings would be planted in these roads.
