Free Aadhaar Biometric Update for Children Until September 30: Where and How to Update

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has stated that Aadhaar biometrics of 2 crore school students have been updated across the country so far.

Parents can also update their children’s biometric details free of cost until September 30.

Children below the age of 5 are issued a Baal Aadhaar based on their photograph and basic details. Fingerprints and iris scans are not collected at this stage.

Once children turn 5, they must visit an Aadhaar centre in person to register their fingerprints, iris scans and other biometric details. The biometric information must then be updated again when they turn 15.

In this regard, the Central Government began updating students’ biometrics by visiting schools directly in September 2025.

In collaboration with state governments, Aadhaar update camps have so far been conducted in 1.56 lakh schools, through which the biometric details of 2 crore students have been updated.

Is Aadhaar Biometric Update Free?

For children between 5 and 17 years of age, biometric updates are free until September 30.

The Central Government had waived the biometric update fee for one year starting from September 2025.

Is Aadhaar Biometric Update Necessary?

Keeping children’s biometric details updated can help reduce authentication-related issues when they pursue higher education and need to use their Aadhaar card.

An Aadhaar card is also required to access government scholarships, education-related schemes and benefits, as well as for examinations such as NEET, JEE and CUET.

Where Can Aadhaar Biometrics Be Updated?

Aadhaar biometric updates cannot be completed online. Parents must take their children to an Aadhaar centre to complete the process.

The nearest Aadhaar centre can be located through the Bhuvan Aadhaar Portal.

Parents should take their child along with the child’s Aadhaar card to the Aadhaar centre for the update.

The child’s fingerprints, iris scan and photograph will be recorded during the process.

After the update, the Aadhaar centre will provide an acknowledgement slip containing an Update Request Number (URN). Parents can use this number to track the status of the update request.
