Chennai Egmore Railway Station Renovation: Changes Extended for 5 Express Trains

Renovation work at Chennai Egmore Railway Station has resulted in an extension of temporary changes to the services of five express trains. According to railway authorities, the revised train arrangements will continue until August 25, 2026. In addition, some Chennai suburban electric train services will be cancelled during late-night and early-morning hours from August 25 to September 7.

The Chennai Egmore railway station redevelopment project, estimated to cost around Rs. 842 crore, is being carried out in multiple phases. As part of the second phase, construction of new platforms has been underway since July in two sections.

The first section covers platforms 1 to 5, while the second section covers platforms 6 to 11. Construction activities are currently focused on the platforms 6 to 11 section.

A 500-metric-tonne crane has been installed in the central area of the station to support the construction work. Girder and pillar installation is also being carried out between platforms 6 and 8.

Due to delays in the construction work, the existing operational arrangements have been extended by another five days. This has resulted in temporary changes to the arrival and departure points of several express trains.

5 Express Trains Affected by Chennai Egmore Renovation

From August 20 to August 24, four trains bound for Chennai Egmore will terminate at Tambaram Railway Station:

- Uzhavan Express from Thanjavur to Chennai Egmore

- Mangaluru Central–Chennai Egmore Express

- Ananthapuri Express from Kollam to Chennai Egmore

- Salem–Chennai Egmore Express

These trains will not operate between Tambaram and Chennai Egmore during the affected period.

Meanwhile, the Malai Kottai Express from Tiruchirappalli to Chennai Egmore will terminate at Mambalam Railway Station from August 20 to August 24.

Changes to Express Train Departures

From August 21 to August 25, the Uzhavan Express, Kollam Express and Malai Kottai Express, which normally depart from Chennai Egmore towards Thanjavur, Kollam and Tiruchirappalli respectively, will instead depart from Tambaram at revised timings.

Similarly, the train scheduled to operate from Chennai Egmore to Mangaluru Central will also depart from Tambaram during this period.

Railway officials said that the temporary train service changes, which were originally announced until August 20, have now been extended until August 25. Train services are expected to o return to normal from August 26, depending on the progress of the renovation work.

Chennai Suburban Train Services Cancelled

Some Chennai suburban train services will also be cancelled from August 25 to September 7, between 11:15 pm and 4:15 am, due to the ongoing construction work at Chennai Egmore Railway Station.

Passengers travelling through Chennai Egmore, Tambaram and Mambalam are advised to check the latest train timings and service updates before starting their journey. Travellers should plan their trips accordingly to avoid inconvenience caused by the temporary railway service changes.
