Chennai Corporation to Invest ₹500 Crore in North Chennai and Resettlement Area Infrastructure

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to invest ₹500 crore this financial year under the Chief Minister`s Integrated Urban Development Mission (CMIUDM) to improve civic infrastructure in North Chennai and major resettlement colonies in the southern part of the city.

The infrastructure upgrade will focus on developing roads, pedestrian plazas, footpaths, and smart parking facilities in areas including Ennore, Manali, Tiruvottiyur, Perambur, Vyasarpadi, Kannagi Nagar, and Ezhil Nagar. The initiative aims to provide better civic amenities and ensure balanced urban development across Chennai.

According to Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran, the civic body is prioritising economically and socially underdeveloped neighbourhoods where roads and public infrastructure require urgent improvement.

Of the total allocation, ₹350 crore will be utilised for new projects during the current financial year, while the remaining ₹150 crore will be spent in the next financial year. The Commissioner also indicated that funding for these projects is expected to increase in future budgets.

Infrastructure works previously executed under the Singara Chennai 2.0 programme—including park modernisation, playground improvements, road upgrades, footpath development, and construction of school buildings—will now continue under the CMIUDM across Chennai.

Although the Tamil Nadu Budget 2026-27 allocated ₹29,863 crore for the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Department, no fresh allocation was made for new flyovers in Chennai.

The previously announced ₹310-crore Velachery Bypass Road–Guru Nanak College Junction flyover has been placed on partial hold due to financial constraints. Meanwhile, the Chennai Corporation has proposed a new flyover connecting Sona Bapu Statue on Nelson Manickam Road with Tank Bund Road near Loyola College to reduce traffic congestion.

Commissioner Sameeran explained that allocating funds to multiple infrastructure projects instead of a single flyover would help achieve more balanced and citywide development.

As part of the urban development plan, the MAWS Department will also promote people-friendly streets with wider footpaths, cycling tracks, redesigned junctions, and improved road connectivity. In addition, the Chennai Corporation plans to establish 20 smart parking facilities across the city and upgrade infrastructure in the Ambattur and Guindy industrial estates.

Following the successful pilot smart parking project in Anna Nagar, similar facilities are being planned for Adyar, Tiruvottiyur, and Thyagaraya Nagar, further enhancing Chennai`s urban mobility and parking management.
