Chennai Airport to Introduce DigiYatra for International Departures in 2027

Chennai International Airport is set to introduce the DigiYatra digital passenger verification system for international departures in early 2027. A two-month trial began on November 1, 2026, and will continue until December 31, 2026.

During the trial, DigiYatra verification is being tested for IndiGo Airlines passengers travelling from Chennai to Dubai and Colombo. The facility will gradually be extended to additional international flights and other airlines.

DigiYatra Trial at Chennai Airport

DigiYatra has been available for domestic departures at Chennai airport since April 2024. The system enables passengers to complete airport entry verification digitally, reducing waiting times and improving convenience.

International travellers have repeatedly requested the extension of DigiYatra to the international terminal. In response, the Airports Authority of India launched the international passenger trial on November 1, 2026.

The initial phase covers IndiGo flights from Chennai to Dubai and Colombo. Following the trial, the facility is expected to be expanded to more international routes and airlines.

How to Use DigiYatra for International Flights

International passengers wishing to use DigiYatra must create a digital identity through the DigiYatra mobile application using their e-passport.

The process involves scanning the e-passport and verifying the information stored in its electronic chip using a smartphone. Once verified, the passenger`s digital identity is stored in the DigiYatra digital wallet on their smartphone.

To help passengers complete registration and understand how to use the facility, airport authorities are planning to deploy support personnel known as Digi Buddies.

Airline and Immigration Checks to Continue

The introduction of DigiYatra at Chennai airport will not replace mandatory airline document verification or immigration procedures. International passengers must continue to complete all required checks as usual.

Chennai airport also offers a fast-track immigration facility for eligible international travellers, helping them complete immigration checks more quickly.

DigiYatra to Improve the International Travel Experience

The introduction of DigiYatra for international departures is expected to streamline airport entry and reduce waiting times for passengers travelling abroad from Chennai.

The trial will continue until December 31, 2026, with a wider rollout planned for early 2027. The initiative is expected to enhance passenger convenience and support the digital transformation of Chennai airport.
