Chennai Essential Commodities Prices Rise Ahead of Festival Season

The wholesale prices of essential commodities, including pulses, spices, rice and ghee, have increased significantly in Chennai. Traders say the price rise is mainly due to poor rainfall in Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, which has affected crop yields and reduced available stocks. Increased demand during the festival season has further intensified the supply shortage.

The price rise has also forced households to adjust their monthly budgets. According to market conditions, the price of toor dal has increased from ₹126 to ₹143 per kg, while round chillies have risen from ₹330 to ₹420 per kg. Rice varieties such as Ponni are being sold at more than ₹70 per kg.

The price of Idhayam sesame oil has increased, while sunflower oil prices have declined. Retailers say consumers are buying essential items in smaller quantities and looking for cheaper alternatives to manage the impact of rising prices.

Traders have warned that the price increase could continue in the coming months, as the market is expected to return to normal only after the Pongal festival.
