Chennai OMR Traffic Diversion: Traffic Changes on Rajiv Gandhi Salai for Metro Rail Work

The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has announced temporary traffic changes on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR) near the Elnet office to facilitate ongoing metro rail construction works.

The traffic restrictions will be implemented from Tuesday, September 1, to Saturday, September 5, 2026, between 11 pm and 5 am, to ensure the safety of motorists and workers during the construction activities.

OMR Traffic Diversion Near Tidel Park

As part of the Chennai traffic diversion, the stretch of Rajiv Gandhi Salai from Tidel Park Junction to Indira Nagar Signal in the incoming direction will remain closed to general traffic during the specified night hours.

However, vehicles picking up or dropping off passengers at Tidel Park and Elnet will be permitted to enter the restricted stretch.

At Tidel Park Junction, incoming vehicles will be diverted onto the outgoing carriageway of Rajiv Gandhi Salai. They will proceed towards Indira Nagar Signal, where they can rejoin the incoming carriageway.

Vehicles travelling towards Ramanujam IT City can access the area using the U-turn at Indira Nagar Signal.

Meanwhile, the new flyover on Sardar Patel Road near Madhya Kailash will remain closed to traffic during the metro rail construction work.

Heavy Vehicle Diversion from Guindy

Under the revised Chennai traffic restrictions, heavy vehicles, including MTC buses, travelling from Guindy will not be permitted to take a right turn at Madhya Kailash Junction towards Rajiv Gandhi Salai.

These vehicles will be diverted through the following route:

Adyar Junction → LB Road → Shastri Nagar 1st Avenue → 11th Cross Street → 10th Cross Street → MG Road → LB Road → ECR/OMR

Light Vehicle Diversion on OMR

Light vehicles travelling from Guindy will be permitted to take a right turn towards Rajiv Gandhi Salai.

At Indira Nagar Signal, they will be diverted through Indira Nagar 2nd Avenue, followed by 3rd Avenue and Kalakshetra Junction. From there, vehicles can join LB Road towards ECR/OMR.

Chennai Traffic Advisory for OMR Commuters

Motorists travelling through OMR, Tidel Park, Indira Nagar and Madhya Kailash during the night-time work hours are advised to follow the temporary traffic diversions and plan their journeys accordingly.

The OMR traffic changes have been introduced to facilitate metro rail construruction while ensuring the safety and smooth movement of road users in the area.
