CM Vijay Launches Rs 3,108 Crore Chennai Water Supply Project

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has laid the foundation stone for a Rs 3,108.55 crore circular water pipeline project aimed at ensuring uninterrupted drinking water supply to residents across Chennai throughout the year.

The project will be implemented through the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Project to Connect Nine Water Treatment Plants

Chennai currently receives around 1,260 million litres of drinking water per day through its existing water supply infrastructure, serving approximately 91 lakh people.

The city`s major water sources include Poondi, Cholavaram, Puzhal, Chembarambakkam and Veeranam lakes, Krishna River water and Kannankottai-Thervoy Kandigai reservoir.

The proposed circular pipeline network will connect nine water treatment facilities, including five existing drinking water treatment plants, three desalination plants and the upcoming 400 MLD desalination plant at Perur.

Over 150 Km of Pipelines Planned

The project includes the construction of:

- 91.20 km of circular pipelines

- 64.20 km of water transmission pipelines

- 2.65 km of pumping pipelines

The associated infrastructure will enable water to be redirected to affected areas whenever supply from a particular source or treatment plant is disrupted.

Improved Water Supply Across Chennai

Currently, the city`s water supply system primarily distributes water from individual treatment plants to designated areas. The new circular pipeline network is designed to improve flexibility by connecting the treatment facilities and allowing water to be distributed according to demand.

The project aims to strengthen Chennai`s drinking water infrastructure and reduce the risk of supply interruptions during all seasons.

The foundation stone was laid at a CMWSSB pumping station in Sholinganallur. Ministers, legislators and senior government officials attended the event.
