South Chennai Waste Segregation Drive Begins October 1: GCC Launches 40-Day Challenge

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is restarting its 40-day waste segregation awareness campaign, “Segregate Waste – Save Tomorrow,” across South Chennai from October 1, 2026. The campaign aims to encourage residents to segregate household waste at source and improve waste management practices.

The initiative was initially launched on August 22 but was temporarily paused to complete the distribution of dry waste bags and monitoring stickers to targeted households.

45,000 Households Receive Waste Bags

According to GCC officials, materials had been distributed to around 45,000 of the targeted 50,000 households as of September 28. Once the remaining distribution is completed, the official 40-day challenge will continue across the targeted areas.

At the end of the campaign, households demonstrating effective waste segregation practices are expected to receive prizes.

Four Types of Waste to Be Segregated

The campaign promotes segregation of household waste into separate categories, including:

- Biodegradable/wet waste

- Non-biodegradable/dry waste

- Sanitary waste

- Hazardous waste

GCC officials said household-level segregation among residents who received the bags has increased from 35% to 64%, indicating improved participation following the awareness campaign.

Red Bins Planned for Sanitary Waste

A key focus of the campaign is improving the collection of sanitary waste. GCC has directed private waste management contractor Urbaser Sumeet to provide dedicated red bins on Battery Operated Vehicles (BOVs).

The contractor has reportedly placed orders for the red-coloured bins, which will be supplied to BOV drivers after procurement.

Challenges in Waste Segregation

While several residential areas have shown improved participation, officials and waste collection workers continue to face challenges in some neighbourhoods. Workers have also highlighted difficulties in collecting properly segregated waste from households that do not follow the prescribed system.

GCC officials said funding remains a major challenge for expanding the waste segregation campaign across the entire city, as the first phase of waste bags was supported through corporate CSR initiatives.

The 40-day South Chennai waste segregation drive is aimed at creating greater awareness among residents and encouraging long-term household-level waste segregation
