Birth Certificate Name Registration: Final Deadline on September 26

Parents who have not yet added their child’s name to the birth registration can use the final opportunity until September 26, 2026. The Tamil Nadu Public Health Department has stated that the deadline will not be extended again.

A birth certificate is an important document used to establish a child’s date of birth and age. A certificate containing the child’s name is required for several official purposes, including adding the child’s name to the family card, applying for Aadhaar, school admission, passport and visa applications, and other identity-related documents.

Under the birth and death registration rules, a child’s birth can normally be registered within 21 days of birth and the certificate can be obtained without a registration fee.

If a child’s birth was registered without a name, parents or guardians can add the name within 12 months by submitting a written declaration to the concerned registrar. After 12 months, the name can generally be registered within the prescribed period by paying the applicable late fee.

As a special concession, an additional opportunity has been provided for birth records registered without names before 2010, as well as records for which the previously prescribed 15-year period has already expired. The final date for registering the name under this special provision is September 26, 2026.

Parents are advised to finalise the child’s name carefully before submitting the declaration, as the name cannot be changed after it has been registered.

The Tamil Nadu government has stated that a similar extension will not be provided in the future. Parents who are eligible under the special provision are advised to use this final opportunity to obtain a complete birth certificate with the child’s name.
