The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is in talks to relaunch the Smart Bike public bicycle sharing service in Chennai, aiming to strengthen last-mile connectivity and promote eco-friendly urban transport solutions.

The Smart Bike system, which was previously suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic due to operational and financial challenges, is now expected to make a comeback with improved infrastructure and enhanced digital features.

Smart Bike Service to Improve Last-Mile Connectivity

The bicycle-sharing initiative was introduced to reduce traffic congestion and encourage non-motorised transport in the city. It enabled users to rent bicycles through a mobile application and return them at designated docking stations across Chennai.

Officials are planning to restart the service at nearly 30 key locations, including metro stations, bus hubs, and commercial areas. The move is expected to benefit daily commuters, office-goers, students, and tourists.

Digital Payment Integration and Upgrades

As part of the relaunch, the Corporation is encouraging the operator to introduce multiple digital payment options such as UPI and mobile wallets, making the service more accessible and user-friendly.

The upgraded Smart Bike system is likely to feature:

- App-based booking and tracking

- Flexible rental plans (hourly and subscription models)

- Expanded docking stations

- Improved maintenance and monitoring

Promoting Sustainable Urban Mobility

With rising vehicle congestion and pollution levels, the Smart Bike relaunch aligns with Chennai’s broader smart city and sustainable transport initiatives. Public bicycle sharing is considered an effective solution to reduce carbon emissions and improve connectivity between public transport networks.

If implemented successfully, the Smart Bike service relaunch could play a key role in transforming urban mobility in Chennai.
