Jio Plans Satellite Network to Provide 100% Coverage Across India

Reliance Jio is planning to develop a satellite-based communication network aimed at extending connectivity across India, including remote villages, islands and border regions. According to the report, the proposed infrastructure will include around 1,600 satellites and 23 ground stations across the country.

India`s largest telecommunications operator plans to combine satellite connectivity with its existing mobile tower and fibre-optic network instead of relying solely on traditional telecom infrastructure.

Satellite Connectivity for More Than 600,000 Villages

Jio presented its satellite connectivity plans at the 10th Telecommunications Conference held in Delhi. The company described the proposed system as a sovereign satellite connectivity network designed to reach areas where establishing conventional telecommunications infrastructure is difficult.

According to the company, the hybrid satellite and terrestrial network aims to provide 100% coverage across more than 600,000 villages, land areas and maritime regions. The proposed service could be particularly useful in remote locations, islands and border areas where conventional network coverage may be limited.

Integration with Existing Network Infrastructure

Rather than operating as a separate system, the planned satellite network is intended to work alongside Jio`s existing mobile and fibre infrastructure.

The company has identified several potential applications, including business communications, rural connectivity, aviation, maritime operations, government services, defence and disaster relief. The network is intended to support communication requirements across these sectors.

The initiative is also being presented as part of India`s broader efforts to strengthen domestic technological capabilities under the Make in India programme.

Jio`s Satellite Deployment Timeline

According to the report, Jio plans to implement the project in phases. The company aims to conduct a pilot test in September 2027 and deploy between 400 and 450 satellites by 2030.

The longer-term target is to complete the planned constellation of approximately 1,600 satellites by 2035. These milestones form part of the company`s proposed expansion strategy, subject to the necessary technical and regulatory requirements.

Jio`s Plans Amid Starlink`s Entry into India

Jio`s announcement comes as Elon Musk`s Starlink continues to seek the remaining approvals required to launch commercial satellite internet services in India, according to the report.

Musk recently alleged that certain wealthy individuals were attempting to prevent Starlink from entering the Indian market. The development highlights the growing attention surrounding satellite-based connectivity and the potential role of satellite networks in expanding internet access across the country.
