Kilambakkam Railway Station Likely to Open Around Deepavali 2026

The much-awaited Kilambakkam railway station is likely to be commissioned around Deepavali 2026, offering a direct rail connectivity option for passengers using the Kilambakkam mofussil bus terminus. Most of the railway-side construction work has been completed, with the remaining major work focused on the skywalk connecting the station with the bus terminus.

Chennai Railway Division General Manager Shailendra Singh said the major physical works on the railway side have been completed. The track and platform works, which form the key components of the project, are largely ready.

Platform 1 has been completed, while Platforms 2 and 3 are nearing completion. A temporary booking office and toilet block have also been completed on Platform 1.

Kilambakkam Railway Station Skywalk

The major pending component is the skywalk connecting Kilambakkam railway station and the Kilambakkam bus terminus across GST Road. The facility is expected to provide passengers with a safer and more convenient route between the railway station and bus terminus without crossing GST Road at road level.

Around 30% of the skywalk work has been completed. The section crossing the railway tracks requires approval from the Principal Chief Engineer of Southern Railway. The Tamil Nadu government has submitted a request seeking the necessary approval.

The Railways and the State government are also preparing a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to finalise maintenance arrangements after the Kilambakkam railway station becomes operational.

Chennai Railway Division Sees Higher Passenger Traffic

The railway station project comes as the Chennai Railway Division records strong growth in both passenger and freight traffic.

The division generated ₹5,038.30 crore in annual earnings during 2025-26, crossing the ₹5,000-crore mark for the first time. The earnings increased by 9.26% compared with the previous financial year.

Passenger traffic also increased to 432.98 million in 2025-26, compared with 425 million in 2024-25. Freight loading stood at 11.33 million tonnes, registering a 6.20% increase.

Major Railway Projects in Chennai

Several major railway capacity augmentation projects in Chennai and surrounding areas are also progressing. These include the Chengalpattu–Arakkonam doubling project, Tambaram–Chengalpattu fourth line, Perambur–Ambattur fifth and sixth lines, and Attipattu–Gummidipoondi third and fourth lines.

The 67.79-km Chengalpattu–Arakkonam doubling project has a sanctioned cost of ₹926.52 crore. Once completed, the capacity of the section is expected to increase from around 13 trains a d day to up to 50 trains a day. The project is also an important part of the proposed 192-km circular suburban rail network connecting Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Arakkonam and Avadi.

The 30.021-km Tambaram–Chengalpattu fourth line project has a sanctioned cost of ₹713.56 crore. The 6.4-km Perambur–Ambattur fifth and sixth lines have been sanctioned at ₹177.82 crore, while the 22.52-km Attipattu–Gummidipoondi third and fourth line project has a sanctioned cost of ₹365.42 crore.

These projects are currently at different stages, including drawing approvals, tendering and tender finalisation. Physical execution will proceed as the required preparatory processes are completed.

Better Bus and Rail Connectivity at Kilambakkam

Once commissioned, the Kilambakkam railway station is expected to improve public transport connectivity for thousands of passengers using the bus terminus. The proposed skywalk will be particularly important in providing a safe and convenient link between bus and rail services.

With railway-side works largely completed and the skywalk construction underway, the Kilambakkam railway station opening around Deepavali 2026 could mark an important step in improving public transport connectivity in Chennai`s southern suburbs.
