Twin Babies Born Through Government IVF Centre in Tamil Nadu

For the first time in Tamil Nadu, a woman who received treatment at the government - run In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Centre established at the Government Hospital for Women and Children in Egmore, Chennai, has delivered twin babies.

The successful treatment at a government hospital, where similar procedures in private hospitals often cost several lakh rupees, has created hope that parenthood can become accessible to everyone in society.

The free IVF Centre at the Government Hospital for Women and Children, Egmore, Chennai, was established on June 7, 2024, at a cost of ₹6.97 crore. Since then, several patients have been receiving treatment at the centre free of cost.

Generally, the success rate of IVF treatments ranges between 35% and 50%. In this case, an embryo was transferred to the uterus of a 32 year old woman during the first week of December 2025. The woman, who had remained childless for five years, was placed under continuous medical supervision. As a result, she delivered twin babies - one boy and one girl  through a surgical procedure on June 23.

As the woman went into labour a few weeks before the scheduled delivery date, the babies were delivered earlier than planned. One baby weighed 1.3 kg, while the other weighed 1.28 kg. Both babies are currently under observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

At present, around 500 women are waiting for treatment at the government IVF centre. So far, nine women have conceived, and the hospital`s Director, Dr. Kuppulakshmi, expressed confidence that they too would soon be blessed with children.
