The Greater Chennai Corporation is planning to implement a biometric attendance system for its employees to ensure proper attendance and completion of full eight-hour work shifts.

The move comes after repeated complaints regarding employees not reporting to duty on time, especially in the Ambattur zone involving conservancy sanitary inspectors. According to GCC data, the civic body has over 36,000 employees, including permanent staff and contract workers.

Under the proposed plan, employees may be required to mark attendance twice a day using biometric devices. Field staff and officials involved in inspections could also use a mobile app with geofencing technology that records live location and photographs during attendance marking.

GCC Commissioner GS Sameeran stated that discussions regarding the feasibility of the project are currently in the preliminary stage. Former Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran also confirmed that earlier discussions were held regarding face-recognition attendance systems and attendance apps for field workers.

Currently, biometric attendance is followed for administrative staff at the Ripon Building, while some senior officials remain exempt from the system.
