AI Education from Class 6: Minister Rajmohan Announces New Curriculum

Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Rajmohan announced that a new curriculum incorporating artificial intelligence and emerging technology skills will be introduced across all schools in the state from the 2027-28 academic year.

Speaking during the discussion on the School Education Department’s demands for grants in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, the minister said the government had decided not to reduce even a single physical education class in any school across Tamil Nadu.

He also announced that a high-level committee would be formed to address teachers’ concerns. A total of 2,771 vacant positions, including 1,443 physical education teacher posts and 1,328 newly created posts, will be filled through a teacher eligibility examination.

The minister further said immediate action would be taken against complaints regarding excessive fees charged by private schools. Complaints can be made through the 24x7 toll-free helpline number 14417, following which the District Education Officer will conduct an appropriate inquiry.

He also stated that the demands of sanitation workers would be considered after the Assembly session and that an amicable solution would be provided.

In a subsequent announcement, Rajmohan said the Tamil Nadu Knowledge Curriculum would be introduced across all schools in the state from the 2027-28 academic year. The curriculum will focus on developing skills such as critical thinking, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies to prepare students for the future.

The AI education and emerging technology curriculum will be designed to help students develop computational thinking, skills and environment-based decision-making abilities in line with the requirements of the future world.

The curriculum will be introduced at different levels, with Classes 6 to 8 as the basic level, Classes 9 and 10 as the intermediate level, and Classes 11 and 12 as an elective subject.

The minister made a total of 31 announcements as part of the School Education Department’s initiatives.
