Chennai commuters can soon track their bus arrival times in real time, thanks to new digital LED boards set to be installed at 616 bus stops and termini across the city. The initiative is part of the Intelligent Transport System project, jointly implemented by Chennai Smart City Limited, the Greater Chennai Corporation, and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC).
These digital displays, similar to railway information boards, will show bus numbers, routes, and expected arrival times. They will be available in three formats 10-line, 4-line, and 2-line boards based on the size of the bus stop.
To support this system, over 2,800 MTC buses have been fitted with GPS trackers to transmit live location data. Officials confirmed that 406 digital boards have already been installed, with the remaining units expected to be operational by next month.
Authorities believe this system will be especially useful for senior citizens and commuters who face difficulties using mobile apps. Pilot runs at locations including Broadway, CMBT, and Express Avenue have reported minimal technical issues, giving commuters hope for a smoother travel experience in the future.
