Adambakkam MRTS Station Opening Delayed Due to Platform Gap Issue Near St Thomas Mount

The opening of Adambakkam MRTS station in Chennai has been delayed as Southern Railway awaits approval from the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) to carry out safety correction works at the station.

The issue was identified during the inspection of the Velachery–St Thomas Mount MRTS extension project, where railway safety officials noticed a wide gap between the MRTS train coaches and the platform at Adambakkam MRTS station. Officials said the gap occurred due to the curved alignment of the railway track near the station.

To fix the problem, Southern Railway has submitted a proposal to the CRS to install steel channels and cement chequered tiles to reduce the platform gap and improve passenger safety.

Even though the Chennai MRTS extension from Velachery to St Thomas Mount was commissioned on March 14, 2026, trains continue to pass through Adambakkam MRTS station without stopping. Currently, MRTS train services halt at nearby Puzhuthivakkam station.

Railway officials have not yet announced the reopening date for Adambakkam MRTS station. At present, around 86 MRTS train services operate daily between Chennai Beach and St Thomas Mount.

The Velachery–St Thomas Mount MRTS extension project, originally proposed in 2008, faced multiple delays due to land acquisition and construction issues before becoming operational this year.
