Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Heavy Rain Likely in 16 Districts, Southwest Monsoon Expected Soon in Kerala

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has announced that the Southwest Monsoon is likely to begin over Kerala within the next three to four days. At the same time, heavy rainfall is expected in 16 districts of Tamil Nadu today.

According to the weather department, an atmospheric circulation is prevailing over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining south Kerala region at an altitude of 3.1 km to 5.8 km above sea level. Due to this, several parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are likely to receive light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Heavy rain with thunderstorms and strong winds at speeds of 40 to 50 kmph is likely at isolated places in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Karur, Namakkal, Erode, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupathur, Vellore, Ranipet, and Tiruvannamalai districts.

The weather department further stated that similar rain conditions may continue tomorrow and the day after tomorrow across several districts including Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli hill areas, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Vellore, and Tiruvannamalai.

On June 4, heavy rainfall is also likely in parts of Tirunelveli hill areas, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari districts.

The RMC said that light to moderate rain may continue across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on June 5 and 6 as well.

Meanwhile, maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu may remain 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal in a few places today before gradually decreasing from tomorrow till June 4.

For Chennai and its suburbs, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy today, with chances of light rain and thunderstorms in some areas. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 39 to 40 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may hover around 29 to 30 degrees Celsius.
