The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast pre-monsoon rainfall across several Western Ghats districts of Tamil Nadu this weekend, with heavy rain expected in hill and ghat regions.

According to the weather department, conditions are becoming favourable for the advance of the southwest monsoon over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 16.

Heavy Rain Forecast for Nilgiris, Theni and Dindigul

The RMC has issued heavy rainfall predictions for several districts:

- Heavy rain likely over The Nilgiris on May 14

Pre-Monsoon Convective Rainfall Expected

VR Durai, Deputy Director General of Meteorology at the RMC, clarified that the rainfall over the Western Ghats region is mainly due to pre-monsoon convective activity and not directly linked to the onset of the southwest monsoon.

He explained that while the southwest monsoon is advancing over the Andaman region, monsoon rainfall over Kerala and the Western Ghats is expected only after the official onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala.

Thunderstorms and Light Rain Across Tamil Nadu

The weather department also stated that:

- Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is likely at isolated places over Western Ghats and Delta districts

- Light rain is expected across the rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal until May 19

Temperatures across Tamil Nadu are expected to remain near normal till May 17

Chennai Weather Update

For Chennai, the forecast for May 14 includes:

- Maximum temperature: 36°C
- Minimum temperature: 26°C
