Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has officially launched student admissions for the 2026–2027 academic year in government schools across Tamil Nadu.

The School Education Department operates 37,554 government schools statewide, with nearly 52 lakh students currently enrolled.

Admissions Started Early to Increase Enrolment

Traditionally, admissions in government schools begin in June after the summer vacation. However, since 2024, the state government has been starting admissions in March to improve student enrolment numbers.

Continuing this initiative, admissions for the upcoming academic year commenced on Monday.

Admission Launch Event in Chennai

The minister inaugurated the enrolment drive by admitting students to Class 1 at a government-aided school in Saidapet, Chennai. Welfare kits were distributed to newly admitted children during the event.

Senior officials, including School Education Secretary P. Chandramohan and Director S. Kannappan, were present.

Statewide Enrolment Drive

Officials stated that hundreds of children have already registered for admission in districts such as Coimbatore, Madurai, and Tiruchirappalli.

Additionally, steps are being taken to enrol children above five years of age who complete pre-school education in Anganwadi centres into nearby government schools. The state aims to enrol 5 lakh new students during the current academic year.
