Tamil Nadu Rain Alert: Heavy Rain in 9 Districts Today, 7 Tomorrow Chennai

Chennai: The Chennai Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy rainfall in nine districts of Tamil Nadu today (September 16). The districts are Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Tirupattur, and Ranipet.

According to the weather department, a trough of low pressure extends from north interior Karnataka to the Gulf of Mannar, passing through south interior Karnataka and parts of Tamil Nadu.

As a result, heavy rainfall is likely in the nine districts mentioned above today. Moderate rainfall may also occur at a few places in other Western Ghats districts, as well as Villupuram, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Erode, Tiruppur, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, and Thoothukudi districts.

Tomorrow (September 17)

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds is likely at one or two places in seven districts: Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, and Thanjavur.

Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds may occur at a few places in other Western Ghats districts and in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Salem, Tiruppur, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Namakkal, Kallakurichi, Madurai, and Sivaganga districts.

Day After Tomorrow (September 18)

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds is likely at one or two places in Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts.

Moderate rainfall may occur at a few places in other Western Ghats districts and in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Erode, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, and Perambalur districts.

Fishermen`s Warning

Squally winds with speeds of 45 to 55 kmph are likely over parts of the Bay of Bengal, parts of the southeast Bay of Bengal, adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, and the southern Andaman Sea.

Winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph are also expected over the northern Andaman Sea, some parts of the southeast Bay of Bengal, and adjoining areas of the southwest Bay of Bengal.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into these sea areas during this period, according to the weather department.
