Chennai Metro Phase-2 Project Crosses 52% Completion; Elevated Corridors by 2027

Chennai Metro Rail Limited has announced that the Chennai Metro Rail Phase-2 project has achieved 52.55% overall completion across its three major corridors.

The ₹63,246-crore mega infrastructure project is currently under construction across 116.1 kilometres and is one of the largest urban transport developments in Tamil Nadu.

Chennai Metro Phase-2 Corridors

Corridor 3: Madhavaram to Siruseri – 45.4 km
Corridor 4: Lighthouse to Poonamallee – 26.1 km
Corridor 5: Madhavaram to Sholinganallur – 44.6 km

The Phase-2 Metro project will feature a total of 118 stations, including 43 underground Metro stations spread across 42.6 km of tunnel routes.

According to Chennai Metro officials, elevated corridor construction works are progressing rapidly and are expected to be completed by 2027. Underground tunnel works are targeted for completion by 2028.

Metro construction activities began in November 2020, while tunnel boring operations started in Madhavaram in October 2022. Tunnel work has already been completed in several important locations including Adyar, Kodambakkam, Panagal Park, Royapettah, Mylapore and Mandaveli.

On the elevated corridor side, key works on the Poonamallee–Porur–Vadapalani stretch under Corridor 4 have been completed. Track-laying works are currently underway in Vadapalani, Kodambakkam and Power House sections.

Officials also stated that the first Metro train service under Chennai Metro Phase-2 is expected to begin soon on the Poonamallee–Porur–Vadapalani route.

The Chennai Metro Phase-2 expansion is expected to improve public transport connectivity, reduce traffic congestion and benefit commuters travelling to major residential, business and IT corridors across the city.
