Chennai Corporation Collects 44.52 Tonnes of Old Household Items in a Single Day

The Greater Chennai Corporation collected and disposed of 44.52 tonnes of unused old household items from homes across the city in a single day on Saturday, October 3.

According to a statement issued by the Chennai Corporation, unused household items such as old sofas, mattresses and other items are collected from homes every Saturday based on information provided by residents.

On October 3, Chennai Corporation sanitation workers collected unused old household items from 178 residents. Based on requests received from the public, 26 vehicles were used to collect the items, which weighed a total of 44.52 tonnes.

The collected items were transported to the Kodungaiyur dumping facility, where they were scientifically incinerated and disposed of.

The initiative has been in operation since October 2025. Under this programme, residents can inform the Chennai Corporation control room by calling 1913 when mattresses and other used household items become unusable. The Corporation collects these items from homes every Saturday based on the information received from the public, helping prevent them from being dumped on roadsides or in water bodies.
