Chennai Metro Yellow Line Records 25,474 Passengers on First Day

Chennai Metro Rail’s new Yellow Line recorded 25,474 passengers on Sunday, October 11, 2026, during the first five hours of regular passenger services on the Poonamallee Bypass–Vadapalani stretch. The 14.64-km elevated corridor was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and began commercial operations at 4 pm on Sunday.

The new metro service is expected to improve connectivity across Chennai’s western suburbs and provide commuters with a faster alternative to road travel.

Chennai Metro Yellow Line: Route and Stations

The Yellow Line forms part of Corridor 4 of Chennai Metro Rail Phase II. The 14.64-km elevated stretch has 11 stations connecting Poonamallee Bypass with Vadapalani, passing through residential and commercial areas such as Porur, Kattupakkam and Iyyappanthangal.

Some stations between Porur and Vadapalani are yet to become operational. At Vadapalani, passengers can interchange with the existing Phase I Metro network to reach other parts of Chennai.

The corridor was constructed at an estimated cost of ₹4,900 crore. It is expected to ease commuting difficulties in western Chennai, where traffic congestion frequently affects road travel.

Chennai Metro Yellow Line Timings

Regular passenger services began at 7 am on Monday, October 12, 2026.

Operating hours: 7 am to 9 pm

Peak-hour frequency: Every 10 minutes, from 8 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 8 pm, Monday to Saturday

Non-peak frequency: Every 15 minutes

Sundays and public holidays: Every 15 minutes throughout the day

Passengers should check official Chennai Metro Rail updates for any changes to operating hours or train frequency.

Driverless Metro Operations Planned

Although the Yellow Line has been designed for unattended train operation, services will initially run with two operators on board. Full driverless operations are expected by mid-2027, subject to testing and safety certification.

Improved Connectivity for Western Chennai

The Yellow Line is a significant addition to Chennai’s expanding Metro network. With improved access to Vadapalani and western suburban neighbourhoods, the corridor is expected to benefit daily commuters, office workers and residents.

The initial ridership of 25,474 passengers in five hours indicates public interest in the new service. Further station openings and the eventual introduction of driverless operations are expected to strengthen connectivity along the corridor.
