Chennai ITI Classes Begin for 2026-27; 95% of Government ITI Trainees Secure Jobs

Classes for the 2026-27 academic year at government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in Tamil Nadu began on Friday, with Labour Welfare and Skill Development Minister Mohamed Parvez inaugurating the academic year at the Government ITI in Guindy, Chennai.

According to the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Department, 95% of trainees who completed their courses at government ITIs last year secured employment with leading industries, highlighting the growing demand for skilled technical workers.

During the inauguration, Minister Mohamed Parvez handed over appointment orders to 10 ITI trainees who secured jobs. He also distributed free textbooks, uniforms, footwear and drawing instrument kits to students starting their vocational training this year.

The event also recognised the achievements of trainees who performed well in the Ninth State-level Skill Competition, conducted by the department in June. Five teams comprising 17 government ITI trainees received ₹50,000 each, along with certificates of appreciation.

Tamil Nadu currently has 132 government ITIs offering 36,344 seats, while 277 private ITIs provide 26,388 seats. Students can choose from 70 engineering trades and 34 non-engineering trades.

Popular ITI courses include Fitter, Electrician, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic, Welder and computer-related trades. These vocational courses provide students with practical technical skills and employment opportunities across various industries.

The high employment rate among ITI graduates underlines the importance of skill-based education and vocational training in Tamil Nadu, particularly for students looking to build careers in manufacturing, engineering, electrical, automobile, technology and other industrial sectors.
