Tamil Nadu’s outstanding credit card receivables have nearly doubled in five years, rising from Rs 1.47 lakh crore in March 2022 to Rs 2.86 lakh crore in March 2026, according to data presented in the Lok Sabha.

Private sector banks accounted for the overwhelming majority of the outstanding amount. Their credit card receivables increased from Rs 1.46 lakh crore to Rs 2.81 lakh crore during the same period.

Public sector banks also recorded a significant rise, with outstanding credit card receivables increasing from Rs 1,123 crore in March 2022 to Rs 5,667 crore in March 2026.

Among individual banks, HDFC Bank recorded the highest outstanding credit card receivables at Rs 1.12 lakh crore as of March 2026. It was followed by ICICI Bank at Rs 54,865 crore and Axis Bank at Rs 49,702 crore.

IDFC First Bank saw one of the sharpest increases, with its outstanding credit card receivables rising from Rs 2,007 crore to Rs 9,165 crore over the five-year period.

The government also highlighted the need for responsible borrowing, credit discipline and awareness of cyber fraud. Tamil Nadu has 128 Centres for Financial Literacy and 75 Financial Literacy Centres, which conducted a combined 1,02,515 awareness camps during 2025-26.

The figures highlight the rapid growth of credit card usage in Tamil Nadu, while also underlining the importance of responsible credit management and financial literacy.
