Chennai Weather Update: Light Showers Ahead, Monsoon Gathers Pace in South

Posted on: 23/May/2025 11:36:57 AM

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall over the ghat regions of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka in the coming days, due to the formation of two low-pressure areas - one over the east central Arabian Sea and another expected to develop over the west central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal.

The existing low-pressure system is currently located off the south Konkan-Goa coasts and is likely to move northward, gradually intensifying into a depression, but with no further intensification, according to the IMD.

A second low-pressure area is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal on May 27, which will bring light to moderate rainfall to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal at isolated locations through May 28.

The Nilgiris and Coimbatore ghat regions are likely to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places from May 24 to 26.

Weather conditions are also becoming favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon over the southern Arabian Sea, including parts of the Maldives and the Comorin region.

Meanwhile, Chennai city may see light showers, with thunderstorms and lightning predicted in a few areas. The maximum temperature in Chennai is expected to remain around 36°C.
