Chennai Rain Alert: Rain Likely in 6 Districts Today, Weather Department Update

Several parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to receive rain today, September 26, 2026, according to the latest weather forecast. Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Vellore and Ranipet are among the districts expected to receive rainfall.

Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of around 40–50 kmph may accompany the rain at isolated places.

Rain Likely in Chennai and 6 Districts

According to the weather department`s forecast, isolated areas of the Western Ghats districts, along with Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Vellore and Ranipet, may receive light to moderate rainfall today.

Thunderstorms and lightning are also possible in some areas. Other parts of Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, may receive light rain at isolated locations.

Chennai and its surrounding areas are likely to experience partly cloudy skies, with the possibility of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms in some locations.

Residents are advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and strong winds and to follow the latest weather updates.

On September 27, moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places in the Western Ghats districts.

Other parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal may receive light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

Rain Forecast for September 28

On September 28, rainfall is likely at isolated places in the Western Ghats districts and several other parts of Tamil Nadu.

The districts that may receive rain include Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Villupuram, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Salem, Erode, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai and Sivaganga.

Light to moderate rainfall may continue at isolated locations across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

Weather System Behind the Rain

The weather system that was previously classified as a Deep Depression weakened into a depression over southern interior Odisha and adjoining Chhattisgarh. It subsequently moved in a north-northwesterly direction.

The system and prevailing atmospheric conditions are contributing to the current rainfall activity over parts of Tamil Nadu.

Fishermen Advisory

According to the weather update, there is no warning for Tamil Nadu coastal areas from September 26 to 29.

However, strong winds s of around 40–50 kmph, occasionally reaching 60 kmph, are expected over the north Andhra coast and adjoining central-west Bay of Bengal on September 26.
