The Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has introduced a new premium AC luxury bus service called “Golden Chariot” in Chennai. These modern buses, similar to those operating in international cities like Singapore and London and Indian cities such as Mumbai and Delhi, are now available for Chennai commuters.

A Step Towards Modern Public Transport

MTC has been taking several steps to improve passenger comfort and modernize public transport in the city. In addition to operating electric buses to reduce air pollution, the corporation has now launched premium AC buses designed to offer a more comfortable and high-quality travel experience.

The new Golden Chariot buses are expected to compete with private omni buses that usually provide luxury travel to suburban areas.

Modern Facilities for Passengers

These premium buses feature a golden exterior, which is why they are popularly called Golden Chariot. The buses are fully air-conditioned and equipped with several modern facilities, including:

  • CCTV cameras for passenger safety
  • Comfortable luxury seating
  • USB mobile charging ports
  • Free Wi-Fi service
  • Emergency alert buttons
  • Digital route display boards
  • BIS monitoring systems

The buses are also designed to be accessible for differently-abled passengers, with easier boarding and alighting facilities. There is also a dedicated reservation facility for wheelchair users.

Ticket Booking Through Mobile App

Unlike regular MTC buses, these premium buses do not have conductors. Passengers can book and purchase tickets through the “Chennai One” mobile app, making the travel experience more digital and convenient.

Routes and Fare Details

In the first phase, the premium bus service is being introduced on a trial basis on two routes:

  • Route 570S: Koyambedu – Siruseri IT Park
  • Route 91: Thiruvanmiyur – Tambaram

Both routes pass through the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) corridor, which houses several major IT companies and sees heavy commuter traffic.

The fare for the Golden Chariot buses ranges from ₹50 to ₹150, depending on the travel distance.

More Routes Planned in the Future

MTC officials have stated that the service is currently being operated on a trial basis, and if the response from passengers is positive, the buses will gradually be introduced on more routes across Chennai.

The corporation also noted that the premium bus service was introduced after collecting feedback from passengers through the Chennai One app.

Bringing Global Bus Experience to Chennai

Premium buses like these are already popular in cities such as Singapore, London, Mumbai, and Delhi. Many Chennai residents who had seen such luxury buses on social media are now able to experience a similar modern travel option in the city.

With the introduction of the Golden Chariot buses, MTC aims to provide safe, comfortable, and technologically advanced public transportation for Chennai commuters.
