Redevelopment works at Chennai Egmore Railway Station are progressing in multiple phases, leading to temporary changes in suburban electric train operations. Construction has now begun on Platforms 10 and 11, which were previously used for EMU services.

As a result, from the 20th onwards, electric trains are being operated from Platforms 5 and 6, leading to a significant reduction in services for 45 days. The temporary arrangement has caused inconvenience to daily commuters.

Southern Railway’s Alternative Arrangements

To minimise passenger hardship, Southern Railway has requested public cooperation and introduced alternative measures.

For the benefit of suburban passengers, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has deployed 60 additional buses from Egmore and surrounding areas.

Additional Bus Services Deployed:

- 8 buses via Secretariat route

- 5 buses via Nungambakkam route

- 27 buses from Royapuram Temporary Bus Stand to Kilambakkam

- 15 buses from Pallavaram via Tambaram to Chengalpattu

These temporary bus services aim to reduce congestion and help commuters reach key destinations during the reduced suburban train operations.

Temporary Inconvenience for Long-Term Upgrade

Railway officials have urged passengers to bear with the temporary disruption, stating that the redevelopment project will significantly modernize Egmore Station and improve infrastructure in the long run.

The 45-day service modification is expected to remain in place until major platform works are completed.
