Posted on: 03/Feb/2026 10:49:47 AM

The long-awaited suburban train service between Velachery and Parangimalai is expected to commence operations in March, according to railway officials.

Officials stated that the construction work on the Velachery–Parangimalai rail line has been fully completed, and preparations are underway for final safety approvals. The route will be inspected by the Railway Safety Commissioner, after which passenger services will be opened to the public.

Improved Connectivity for South Chennai

The new rail service is expected to significantly improve suburban rail connectivity in South Chennai, benefiting daily commuters from Velachery, Guindy, Parangimalai, and surrounding areas. At present, train services operate only up to Velachery, and the extension to Parangimalai will help reduce road congestion and travel time.

Safety Inspection and Final Approval

Railway sources confirmed that:

- Track laying, electrification, and signal works have been completed

- Trial runs have been successfully conducted on the route

- Passenger services will begin soon after safety certification

Once operational, the Velachery–Parangimalai section will integrate seamlessly with Chennai’s existing suburban rail network.

Boost to Public Transport Infrastructure

The launch of this service marks an important milestone in strengthening Chennai’s public transport infrastructure. Commuters are expected to benefit from faster, reliable, and affordable rail travel, especially during peak hours.

Railway authorities said further announcements regarding train schedules and service frequency will be made closer to the launch date.
