5.26 Million Metric Tonnes of Solid Waste Cleared at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur Dump Yards: Chennai Corporation

The Greater Chennai Corporation has announced that 5.26 million metric tonnes (52.64 lakh metric tonnes) of solid waste have been successfully removed through bio-mining at the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dump yards.

Daily Solid Waste Management in Chennai

In an official statement, the Chennai Corporation said that solid waste management operations are being effectively implemented across the city. On average, 6,300 metric tonnes of solid waste are cleared every day from various parts of Chennai.

The Greater Chennai Corporation covers an area of 426 square kilometres, with nearly 10 million people residing in and commuting through the city on a daily basis.

Singara Chennai Initiative and Cleanliness Drive

Following the guidance of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, the Corporation has intensified cleanliness and waste management activities under the “Singara Chennai” initiative.

As part of this programme, regular cleaning and maintenance works are being carried out at:

- Roads and streets

- Residential neighbourhoods

- Bridges

- Bus shelters

- Burial grounds and other public spaces

In addition, the Corporation is actively removing construction and demolition waste to ensure a cleaner and healthier urban environment.

Environmental Benefits of Bio-Mining

Officials stated that the bio-mining process has significantly contributed to environmental protection, reduction of legacy waste, and improvement of land and groundwater quality, marking a major step forward in Chennai’s sustainable urban development efforts.
