Cold Sores: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment & Prevention

Cold sores, also called herpes labialis, are small, fluid-filled blisters that usually develop on or around the lips. They are mainly caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) and can return after the initial infection.

Symptoms

Cold sores often begin with:

* Tingling or itching

* Burning or stinging

* Redness

* Small, painful blisters

* Fluid-filled sores that later crust over

Most cold sores heal within one to two weeks.

Causes & Triggers

The virus spreads through close contact, saliva, and contact with infected sores. Outbreaks may be triggered by:

* Stress

* Illness or fever

* Sun exposure

* Injuries or irritation around the lips

Treatment

Most cold sores heal on their own. Antiviral creams or ointments may help shorten the outbreak when used early. Do not pop or squeeze the blisters, as this can spread the virus and delay healing.

When to See a Doctor

Seek medical advice if cold sores are unusually severe, last longer than expected, occur frequently, appear near the eyes, or you have a weakened immune system.
