The Chennai Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy rainfall in seven districts of Tamil Nadu today due to a weak trough extending across the region. Several parts of the State are also likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph.

According to the weather department, a weak trough extends from the southwest Bay of Bengal to Lakshadweep through South Tamil Nadu and Kerala at an altitude of 5.8 km to 7.6 km. Another weak trough persists in the lower atmosphere over the North Tamil Nadu coastal region, creating favourable conditions for widespread rainfall.

Heavy Rain Alert for August 6

Heavy rain is likely at isolated places in:

- Ranipet
- Tiruvallur
- The Nilgiris
- Hilly areas of Coimbatore
- Hilly areas of Theni
- Hilly areas of Tirunelveli
- Hilly areas of Kanniyakumari

Several other districts, including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Tirupathur, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Salem, Erode, Tiruchirappalli, Karur, Madurai, the delta districts, and parts of Puducherry and Karaikal, are expected to receive moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Rain Forecast for August 7

On August 7, heavy rainfall is likely over:

- The Nilgiris
- Hilly areas of Coimbatore
- Hilly areas of Theni

Moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is also expected in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupathur, Tiruvannamalai, Salem, and Namakkal, while the rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal may receive light to moderate rain.

Chennai Weather Forecast

For Chennai and its suburbs, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy today and tomorrow. The city is likely to experience moderate rain with thunderstorms during the evening or night in isolated areas.

The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 36–37°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to be around 25–26°C.

Temperature Outlook

The weather department has stated that there is no significant change in maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on August 6 and 7, although temperatures may dip slightly. From August 6 to August 10, maximum temperatures are expected to remain close to normal across the region.

Residents are advised to remain alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds, especially in districts under the heavy rain warning, and to follow official weather advisories while planning travel or outdoor activities.
