Temple History

Sri Subramanyaswami Temple in Kundrathur is an ancient hill temple dedicated to Lord Subramanyaswami, also known as Lord Murugan. The temple is believed to be between 500 and 1,000 years old and is closely connected with the worship of Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan.

According to the traditional history associated with the temple, after defeating the demons at Tiruporur, Lord Muruga continued his journey towards Tiruthani. During his journey, He is believed to have stopped at this place, installed a Shiva Lingam, and worshipped Lord Shiva through meditation. The Shiva Lingam is worshipped as Lord Kandaleeswarar in a separate shrine within the temple complex.

The present temple is traditionally associated with the Chola period and is believed to have been developed during the reign of Kulothunga Chola. The temple stands on a hill and can be reached by climbing 84 steps. The hill itself is reflected in the name Kundrathur, with the Tamil word "Kundru" referring to a hill.

Temple Significance

One of the most distinctive features of this temple is the unique arrangement of Lord Muruga with His two consorts, Valli and Deivanai. All three are positioned facing north. The design of the sanctum creates a special visual experience for devotees. When viewed directly from the front, Lord Muruga can be seen alone. From the left or right side, devotees can see Him accompanied by either Valli or Deivanai.

The temple has a strong connection with the devotional traditions of Tamil Nadu. Saint Arunagirinathar has praised the Lord of this temple in his Tirupugazh hymns. Kundrathur is also the birthplace of Sekkizhar, the renowned author of Periya Puranam. A shrine dedicated to Sekkizhar is located at the foot of the hill, and during the annual Sekkizhar Guru Puja, Lord Muruga is brought down from the hill temple for the special occasion.

The temple is particularly visited by devotees praying for the removal of obstacles in marriage proposals. Devotees also perform abhishekam, offer vastras, and conduct special worship and wedding-related rituals for Lord Muruga as part of their prayers and thanksgiving.

The temple`s sacred tree is the Vilwa tree, while the Saravana Poigai is regarded as the temple`s holy water source. The sacred ash used during abhishekam is given to devotees as prasadam.

Special Features of the Temple

The hill temple can be reached by climbing 84 steps. The entrance to the sanctum has Dwarapalakas holding Vajra and Trident weapons. The walls surrounding the main shrine feature images of Lord Vishnu, Lord Dakshinamurthy, and Goddess Durga.

The temple complex also has separate shrines for Lord Kasi Viswanatha, Goddess Visalakshi, Lord Vinayaka, Lord Bhairava, the Navagrahas, and Nagar deities. Lord Valanchuzhi Vinayaka has a shrine along the pathway leading up the hill.

The annual Skanda Sashti festival is celebrated over eight days. The sixth day marks the traditional celebration of Lord Muruga`s victory overer the demon Surapadman. The wedding of Lord Muruga with Valli is observed on the seventh day, followed by the wedding celebration with Deivanai on the eighth day.

Festivals Celebrated

The major festivals celebrated at Sri Subramanyaswami Temple include Vaikasi Visakam, Skanda Sashti, Tirukarthikai, Thai Poosam, and Panguni Uthiram. Skanda Sashti is one of the most important celebrations, attracting large numbers of devotees for special poojas, abhishekams, and religious events. The Sekkizhar Guru Puja is another significant occasion associated with the temple and its connection with the renowned Tamil Saivite scholar.
