Tamil Nadu: GST- Registered Petrol, Diesel Bunks to Get VAT Registration Exemption

Petrol and diesel retail outlets registered under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime will no longer need separate registration under the Tamil Nadu Value Added Tax (VAT) Act, Commercial Taxes and Registration Minister D Logesh Tamilselvan announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on September 7.

The exemption will apply to petrol and diesel retailers who resell fuel after VAT has been paid at the first-sale stage in Tamil Nadu, provided the outlets are registered under the GST Act.

The move is aimed at simplifying tax compliance for fuel retailers by eliminating the need for separate VAT registration when GST registration is already in place.

New Tax Assessment Circles

The minister also announced that a separate tax assessment circle will be created in every Commercial Taxes division to handle dealers governed by earlier tax laws, including the Tamil Nadu VAT Act and the Central Sales Tax Act.

Economic Intelligence Wing

A new Economic Intelligence Wing will also be established at the state level to analyse tax-related data, monitor officials` performance and facilitate the sharing of best practices.

The department will further expand faceless tax administration to cover assessment, audit and refunds, with the aim of improving taxpayer services.

The minister said the department`s training policy would also be restructured to improve the knowledge and skills of officials and staff, while promoting greater use of technology in tax administration.
