Heavy Rains Lash Chennai and Northern Tamil Nadu Districts

Heavy rains lashed Chennai and neighbouring northern districts of Tamil Nadu as the northeast monsoon intensified. Chennai and surrounding areas have experienced showers since Tuesday evening, with more rainfall forecast over the next 48 hours.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has indicated that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Tamil Nadu coast.

Heavy Rain Alert for Tamil Nadu Districts

The weather department has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Ramanathapuram districts, along with Puducherry and Karaikal.

The rainfall is associated with an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Tamil Nadu. Residents are advised to follow official weather updates and take necessary precautions.

GCC Undertakes Road Repairs and Rain Relief Measures

As part of northeast monsoon preparedness, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is carrying out road patchwork across Zones 1 to 15 at an estimated cost of ₹21.80 crore. Repairs are being undertaken using concrete and tar mixtures to address damaged road surfaces.

The civic body also distributed 6,000 food packets to rain-affected residents in Virugambakkam on Wednesday morning.

Authorities are continuing precautionary measures as Chennai and surrounding districts prepare for further rainfall.
