Tamil Nadu Rainwater Harvesting Awareness Campaign Launched by CM Vijay

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay launched a rainwater harvesting awareness campaign in Chennai on Wednesday to encourage the public to conserve rainwater and protect groundwater resources. The initiative aims to make rainwater harvesting a statewide public movement.

Rainwater Harvesting Campaign Launched in Chennai

The event was organised by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department at the headquarters of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board in Chepauk, Chennai.

During the programme, the Chief Minister unveiled the ‘Thuli’ logo for the rainwater conservation awareness campaign and inspected a model house demonstrating rainwater harvesting facilities. He later released an awareness short film on a large screen at an event held at Marina Beach.

Several state ministers and senior government officials attended the programme.

Tamil Nadu Government Plans Statewide Rainwater Conservation Drive

The state government has directed officials to strengthen rainwater harvesting efforts across Tamil Nadu and turn the initiative into a public movement.

The directive was issued by Additional Chief Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi of the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department. It highlights the need to conserve rainwater and protect groundwater amid rising water demand, urbanisation, changing rainfall patterns and climate change.

The campaign will focus on restoring existing rainwater harvesting systems, creating new structures, improving groundwater recharge and raising groundwater levels.

Rainwater Harvesting Systems to Be Inspected

As part of the initiative, officials will inspect rainwater harvesting facilities in government offices, local body buildings, public buildings, schools, hospitals, apartment complexes and commercial establishments.

The inspections will cover rooftop collection systems, water channels, filter chambers, groundwater recharge pits and wells.

Public Participation in Rainwater Conservation

Government departments, local bodies, educational institutions, residents’ welfare associations, self-help groups, voluntary organisations, industries and community organisations will work together to promote rainwater conservation across the state.

The Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department will serve as the nodal department for implementation and monitoring, coordinating with district administrations and local bodies.

The campaign aims to improve rainwater collection, support groundwater recharge and encourage long-term water conservation practices throughout Tamil Nadu.
