Tamil Nadu Government Continues Free Dhoti and Saree Scheme; ₹300 Crore Allocated

The Tamil Nadu government has announced that the free dhoti and saree distribution scheme will continue for the upcoming Pongal festival. A Government Order (G.O.) has been issued allocating ₹300 crore for the welfare programme.

The scheme, which benefits eligible ration card holders across the state every year during Pongal, aims to provide free dhotis and sarees while also supporting the handloom and textile sector by creating employment for weavers.

According to the Government Order, ₹300 crore has been earmarked for the implementation of the scheme. Production and procurement of the garments will be carried out through the designated agencies to ensure timely distribution ahead of the Pongal festival.

The free dhoti and saree scheme has been one of Tamil Nadu`s long-running welfare initiatives, benefiting millions of families every year while providing sustained work opportunities for handloom and powerloom weavers across the state.
