Chennai Metro–MRTS Integration Nears Final Stage, MoU Sent for Approval
The proposed integration of MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) with Chennai Metro Rail Limited has reached a crucial final stage, marking a major step forward for public transport in Chennai.
Southern Railway has forwarded the final draft of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) submitted by Chennai Metro to the Railway Board for approval. Once the proposal receives clearance, the agreement is expected to be signed in June 2026, with the takeover process likely to begin immediately after.
The move will enable Chennai Metro Rail Limited to take over MRTS operations, paving the way for better coordination between metro and suburban rail services in the city.
